Arya named her direwolf after a warrior queen of Dorne. She sends her off after Nymeria bites Joffrey in season 1. After that, she is not shown in the show until season 7, when Arya finds the direwolf on her way to Riverrun. As per the books, Nymeria is said to be leading a pack of wolves that do not fear men. She refuses Arya's invitation to go home with her, and returns with her pack to the forest.

Arya names her for Nymeria , the warrior-queen of the Rhoynar who led her people to safety in Dorne , a thousand years before the events of the series.

Septon Meribald tells Brienne about a pack of hundreds of wolves that prowls along the Trident , rumored to be led by a monstrous she-wolf, which brings aurochs down all by herself, that no trap nor snare can hold her, fears neither steel nor fire, slays any wolf that tries to mount her, and devours no other flesh but man.
The she-wolf in question is presumably Nymeria, though the rumors are probably exaggerated.
