After a trial period of one year, the caterers fled for their lives and the doors of the dining room, as such, were locked forever. Today there is a new spirit on Haogen. Its financial situation is slowly improving, its younger generation is returning home, the new expansion neighborhood will soon be built, and in a forest near the kibbutz gates seven or eight protest tents were recently spotted.
The young people of Kibbutz Haogen have also apparently become involved in the miracle of the socioeconomic protest. Moreover, beneath the looming corpse of the so-called new dining room, a very pleasant cafe-delicatessen is operating: White lace curtains adorn the glassed-in balcony; vases of flowers and platters of fresh fruit are on the tables; and toys for children are scattered over the spacious lawn in front.
Michal Grazia, who was born in the neighboring moshav of Tzur Moshe, has been catering private events for over a decade. At first her kitchen was located in the backyard of the family farm; afterward, she moved to the abandoned storehouses behind the dining room on Kibbutz Haogen, and it was there that her deli-and-cafe took shape. People drawn in by the aroma of food that once again wafted from the area wanted to buy something to eat at home. Plus, picnic baskets and blankets can be borrowed for a picnic on the lawn those outside would do well to take a walk to the nearby cultural hall, another wonderful architectural jewel of the late s. The margarine and soup powder have been replaced by olive oil and fresh herbs, the culinary tribute to the past is in good taste, and the work is accomplished by talented and sensitive hands. On Fridays and Saturdays at the cafe-deli, the tribute to the past reaches a peak, with a special menu devoted to nostalgia-inspired dishes.
There are floshkes - or spaetzle in the German-Austrian version - which are dumplings served with a ragout of veal and Parmesan shavings; in the flavor of the rich beef patties one can still find echoes of the flavor children once enjoyed in the famous kibbutz meat patties, which were baked on large stainless steel trays and contained lots of bread and little beef.
