What is the best type to learn and what should I learn if I am travelling to an Arabic speaking country? Should I be learning more than one of them?

And if so, which one should be learned before the other? Similarly, western scholars distinguish two standard varieties of Arabic; the Classical Arabic of the Quran and early Islamic literature, and MSA which is our modern standard Arabic.

Classical Arabic is the language used in the Quran as well as in numerous literary texts. Maghrebi dialect is generally not comprehensible to other speakers from the rest of the Arab world. It is important to note that it does not matter whether you learn Moroccan, Algerian or Tunisian variants of Maghrebi because they are interchangeably intelligible.

It is the Arabic spoken in Egypt. It is easily understood by most other Arabs due to the popularity of Egyptian movies and TV series. It is probably the easiest dialect to learn for non-native speakers. This is a popular book among beginner learners of Egyptian dialect. There are several Yemeni dialects. Yemeni and Maghrebi dialects are considered the hardest Arabic dialects to understand. It is spoken by over 30 million native speakers in the region and elsewhere. It comprises several mutually-intelligible varieties spoken in Iraq and even parts of Eastern Syria. There are other varieties of Arabic such as Hassaniya in Mauritania. To illustrate this interesting phenomenon, I created this fictitious scenario that sums up a typical day of an Arab speaker.

These written Arabic symbols are almost exclusively used in oral reciting of the Quran. MSA is used in virtually every media outlet from TV to movies to newspapers to radio broadcasts. MSA is the Arabic that is used in everyday life in Arabic speaking countries. Modern Standard Arabic is very similar to classical or Quranic Arabic.

In fact, many Arabs use them interchangeably. Overall, the two types of Arabic are very similar. MSA also pronounces words, groups words and elicits a different context between words than in Quranic Arabic. Quranic classical Arabic is more common in literature and writing while MSA is more common spoken.

Because both are similar, with a few minor differences, most Arabs can be taught one and quickly learn the other.
