Should I be concerned about swollen feet and ankles during pregnancy? Those swollen ankles are a normal, if frustrating, woe for many expectant women. During pregnancy, the extra fluid in the body and the pressure from the growing uterus can cause swelling or "edema" in the ankles and feet.

The swelling tends to get worse as a woman's due date nears, particularly near the end of the day and during hotter weather. Although sudden swelling in the face or hands may be a sign of a condition known as preeclampsia, mild swelling of the ankles and feet is usually no cause for concern.

Call your health care provider if you notice swelling of your face, around your eyes, or more than mild swelling of the hands. Also let your doctor know right away if you have sudden swelling anywhere or if one leg is more swollen than the other. However, preeclampsia may also be present if the protein level in urine is normal. High blood pressure with headache, changes in vision, abdominal pain, or abnormal blood or urine test results may also indicate preeclampsia.

If peripartum cardiomyopathy is suspected, electrocardiography, chest x-ray, echocardiography, and blood tests to check heart function are done. Lying on the left side, which moves the uterus off the large vein that returns blood to the heart inferior vena cava. Wearing loose clothing that does not restrict blood flow, particularly in the legs for example, not wearing socks or stockings that have tight bands around the ankles or calves.

If pregnancy itself is the cause, swelling can be reduced by lying on the left side, elevating the legs periodically, wearing support stockings, and wearing clothing that does not restrict blood flow.
